Len continues cycling through farmland and rolling country as he arrives into the city of Maize, just northwest of Wichita. At TS27, he is dedicating his ride to 17 year-old Peyton, from Youngsville, Louisiana who is having surgery today -- we're all thinking of you today, Peyton! Thank you to Treg for sharing his story:
"Peyton is a very loving 17-year old who always has a positive outlook on everything. Peyton was having pain in the back of his knee and his mother decided to bring him in to have it checked out. On March 14, 2017, the doctors diagnosed him with Osteosarcoma. Peyton’s life had changed in a matter of minutes, but he knew that it wasn’t over. He has so much faith in God and knows that God will heal him.
Peyton was evaluated by doctors at St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, and began chemotherapy. Peyton’s tumor did not spread, which is a great thing. The doctors planned on doing chemo for a few weeks to shrink the tumor and then do surgery to remove it. Through all of this stress, Peyton still kept his faith.
Peyton is a very smart and caring young man. His hobby is playing on his laptop and video games. When Hopecam contacted Peyton, he was told he would receive a tablet, and was ecstatic. Peyton looked at this as an opportunity to help him through his journey of college.
On June 19, 2017 Peyton will have his surgery to remove his tumor and part of his femur bone.
This journey is not short, but it's just a season of his life and will eventually come to an end, and he will be Cancer-Free. Peyton is everyone’s hero."
Founded in 1886, Maize is a city with a population of close to 4,400. The town motto, “Where Community Counts,” is evident in the mission to be the best small city in Kansas. The city’s name is the Native American word for corn.
