Time Station 45: West Union, West Virginia is for Lily

As Len enters the Mountain State of West Virginia, he experiences how it earned its nickname with 11,000 feet of climbing over 85 miles. We are grateful for the support of Advantage Engineers at TS45. At this checkpoint and throughout the day ahead, Len is inspired by 5 year-old Lily's battle. Her family writes:

"Lily uses Hopecam a lot during the school week. Hopecam has really helped her create friendships and continue her education without falling behind or compromising her immune system. Hopecam has made Lily feel less isolated and has alleviated some of the apprehensiveness that appears when she is able to physically be in the classroom. We are so grateful to her Elementary school and her teacher for their willingness to participate in Hopecam." Read more about DAY 11 Honor Child, Lily>>

About West Union
West Union is a small town in Doddridge County that was settled in the late 1780s by James Coldwell. The settlement was originally called Lewisport, but a later owner of the land area, Nathan Davis, suggested the name West Union. Two major events have shaped the town’s history. A fire burned most of the town down on March 27, 1858. Fortunately, the recently completed Parkersburg branch of the B&O Railroad allowed the town to rebuild quickly. In June 1950, a flood destroyed a lot of the town, killing 20 and destroying a 107-year- old bridge.

Today, West Union is the county seat of Doddridge County with a population of nearly 900 residents. The Parkersburg branch of the B&O Railroad is now a significant part of the North Bend Rail Trail, a 72 mile stretch of the American Discovery Trail. Caves along this trail were once used as a part of the Underground Railroad.
