Meet Macie: A Story of Courage, Friendship & Hope & Connection
As Len Forkas continues his 183 Miles of Hope journey, he dedicates his third marathon to Macie, whose courage, love of friendship, and determination to return to school remind us why keeping children connected matters.
Macie is a courageous ninth grader who loves spending time with her friends, making memories, and enjoying the moments that make childhood special.
In August 2025, Macie's life changed when she was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Since then, she has undergone two rounds of radiation, including treatment to her brain and spine, as well as multiple chemotherapy medications. Her care has included treatment at Huntsman Cancer Institute and Primary Children's Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Despite the challenges of cancer treatment, Macie continues to find joy in friendship and special experiences. In June 2026, she attended the Oncology Prom hosted by Primary Children's Hospital alongside her childhood best friend, Rosie. Just a month later, the two made another unforgettable memory attending a Benson Boone concert in Denver, Colorado.
On August 25, 2026, Macie reached another important milestone — starting ninth grade. While her treatment and recovery currently allow her to attend just one class at school, each opportunity to return to the classroom is a meaningful step toward the everyday experiences she deserves. Macie's story is a beautiful reminder that cancer may change a child's daily life, but it shouldn't take away the joy of friendship, learning, and feeling connected.
